Installation with video and performance

To revisit nature and understand yourself as part of the landscape is to see worlds animate. By representing interconnectedness through materiality, this installation emulates the life cycle of what flows through.
For hundreds of years, colonization has misinformed and manipulated humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Through the otherization of ecological perspectives, the colonization of native knowledge, and the detrimental effects of industrialization, modern society has experienced an irrevocable disconnect with the Earth. However, the resiliency of nature persists. By becoming students of existing knowledge, and revisiting natural sites that are significant to the personal, we can develop empathetic understandings and establish lost connections. Ultimately, we can embrace the interconnectedness of nature, and know that humans too are nature, and respect all life forms as we do humanity. Through harmony, there is hope.
Researching human usage of the river including indigenous and industrial histories, exploring natural plant and wildlife communities such as the black ash swamp, and learning from decolonized Anishinabek teachings can allow for connections to be drawn between society’s estranged relationship with nature as it relates to colonization and industrialization. Still, the resiliency of nature persists, and ecological relationships of the river can put it in perspective.
Flow invites you to embody the natural world by investigating ecological perspectives of the Grand River, where it runs through the land humans currently refer to as Grand Rapids, Michigan.

	Echoed Industry

Destin Nordyke
Sound installation with digital printsOf the five senses, sound is one that can be dissected to a hair, or phased out and ignored entirely by the mind. Especially in a bustling city, specific noises can wake up a sleeping family, while sounds of similar intensity are simultaneously drowned out and beyond recall. The audio in Echoed Industry utilizes field recordings from around the west side of Grand Rapids, particularly from the South West Area Neighborhood (SWAN), to create an experience that encompasses all aspects of the city’s sonic profile.
One of the most frequent contributors to this echo-system of noise is the automobile. Cars and trucks creep through the city, followed by the sound waves they produce. Frequently, they made their way into the background of these field recordings. This vehicular omnipresence has lurked its way not only into our ears, but into the core of American infrastructure. Car-centric urban design has left its mark on every American city, including Grand Rapids. Left behind are the echoes of people, churches, theaters, and other public buildings that once lay on these grounds—forcibly removed to make way for highways built in the 1960s. Places once filled with countless memories, and cherished by the communities that called them their home. All destroyed by this “industry of the future,” the same one that now brings tens of thousands of people into Grand Rapids each and every day.

Installation with videoRemote research labs dot the world. Scattered throughout this planet's forests, mountains, and coasts, humans gaze at the edges of the known. With the ubiquity of scientific knowledge in today's globally connected society, every detail can become a data point housed out of sight in server farms hidden in our cities. This data is then fed back to us, dictating where resources are allocated, which sounds get heard, and what light reaches our eyes. Before the internet age, collections like those in museums or universities were the primary touch point for the public to glimpse behind the curtain and see the process of gathering data. Now, the mega archive of the internet serves as a repository for any and every thing, with individualized, curated systems the public is expected to wade through. This installation speculates a world in which novel user interfaces have changed how we interact with information. When the threads of the world wide web are frayed, hyperlocal sustainable living is embraced, and the source of information becomes the site of its deposition.

SculptureUnderneath Grand Rapids’ South West Area Neighborhood (SWAN) are miles of mines that have little commercial use today. They stretch across the city and underneath waterways such as the Grand River. These mines are remnants of the city’s first industry boom: gypsum mining. During the early 1900s, miners in this area began to grow mushrooms in unused parts of the mines. At a time when sustainability was not front of mind, the people of Grand Rapids chose to use emptied mines in a sustainable manner. As cities grow, land use becomes a topic of contention. Debates between commercial land value and aesthetical land value take place—a familiar conversation to the residents of SWAN. This neighborhood once housed the industries of our city. Now that they’re gone, what’s left to do with it?

This speculative world questions what an architectural relationship between fungi and humans might look like. As abandoned mines are left to their own devices, the fruiting bodies of buried mycelium emerge. Stemming from approaches to alternative realities such as solarpunk, could this relationship be sustainable, or even pleasurable? Or, is this nature's attempt to re-colonize space that was once theirs?

	Germination
Irlanda Beltran
InstallationCities are constantly changing and evolving, sometimes at a rapid pace that can seem overwhelming. The impacts of these changes can be seen everywhere, from the architecture of neighborhoods to the makeup of their populations. Unfortunately, many of these changes are fueled by unjust policies that discriminate against low-income individuals and communities of color. This is a widespread problem that can be observed in cities across the United States and beyond.

Germination aims to explore the impact of gentrification on the city of Grand Rapids. Two distinct aesthetics showcase the stark contrast between the established communities that are being pushed out by rising property rates and the new developments that are taking their place. Through this speculative narrative, Germination offers a fictional representation of the alienating effects of gentrification and the devastating impact it can have on the lives of the individuals and families who call these neighborhoods home.

Superfund Coffee Hide Underground Furniture StrikeApril 22-24, 2022

Civic Studio is proud to present Superfund Coffee Hide Underground Furniture Strike, an exhibition of research-driven art that looks at the histories, presents, and futures of the SWAN neighborhood on the west side of Grand Rapids. Working in a variety of media—video, drawing, installation, design, sound, and photography— the artists in Civic Studio have responded to diverse subjects including the Butterworth Landfill, the role of coffee culture in gentrification, the leather trade, symbolic and literal burial sites, and the driving forces behind the furniture labor strikes of the early twentieth century.Special thanks to PADNOS for their generous support of this project.
Featuring: Sam Arnone, Railyn Eaddy, Xavier Golden, Isabella Good, Samuel James, Kasey Kanka, Floria Mason, Janiah Mather, Julia Michalik, CB O'Grady, Andrea Sanchez, Joycelle Shoemaker, Andrew Vickery, Tiffany M. Wells
