Daily life exists in tension. The horrific and unjust becomes disguised as normal, the points of reference scrambled. Civic Studio's exhibition, Liminal Dissonance, occupies the space between the struggle which is life under the current systems, and our unknown future. This studio encourages viewers to redefine terms of existence.

There is a point of crisis in the world. The horrific and unjust becomes disguised as normal, the points of reference scrambled. Hidden tensions are being brought out; they are unavoidable. Liminal Dissonance exists in the in between, highlighting the precarity of our world marked by rapid environmental changes and increasingly impossible terms of living. The studio is a reminder of being situated in the midst of this transition, calling to recognize the occurrences which may otherwise go unnoticed. Borne on the Westside of Grand Rapids, Liminal Dissonance presented stories of the past and imaginaries for the future which are unbound by geographical location. The Studio's work included new research on the Butterworth Dump and the West Side Ditch, and became focused on decolonializing public imaginaries and understanding cycles of extraction and displacement.
